About the Project

The Green Tourism Project for the Strangford Lough and Mourne Mountains & Ring of Gullion areas of Northern Ireland will introduce an internationally recognized accreditation scheme to tourism businesses both large and small throughout the region. Why? So we can be a step ahead and capitalize on the current and growing trend for eco-friendly travel and holidays.

It’s a win-win situation: by reducing the carbon footprint, by supporting local producers and keeping the area beautiful through environmental measures, tourism businesses will be making a visible effort to promote a greener way of operating, while ultimately seeing costs fall and bookings and visitor numbers increase.

Why Green Tourism

NITB have selected the Green Tourism organization as their environmental travel partner because it is the largest and most established sustainable grading programme in the world, offering highly regarded, accredited and independent guidance to tourism and hospitality businesses around the globe and is validated by the International Centre for Responsible Tourism.

Green Tourism believes in promoting sustainability through a number of measures including reducing energy use, careful management of waste and water resources, buying local and also in celebrating regional craft, culture and ecology. They are strongly committed to the ethos that no matter how small the business, the switch to a greener way of thinking makes a big difference.

We want to make that difference in Northern Ireland, and there is no doubt that more and more visitors will be green-minded - and will spend accordingly.

By signing up for free to our Green Tourism Project in 2015, your business could gain one of three awards, proven to be powerful talismans to encourage visitors, and in particular, international visitors, to your destination.
